Toulouse-Lautrec was one of the most exceptional artists of the 19th century. Born into the nobility Lautrec opted to live his life in Paris amongst the Bohemians in the district of Montmartre.
While Lautrec's father Count Alphonse acted the upper class country squire, Henri drew show girls, dancers and singers from the streets and night clubs of Paris.
Lautrec made his living creating posters for the infamous music hall the Moulin Rouge. The place where the Cancan was danced. Lautrec likewise captured life in various parts of the Paris. He drew the circus and the racecourse and even illustrated magazine ads for bike chains. Lautrec developed book covers and painted illustrations for magazines.
Lautrec's art was much influenced by the works of Manet and Degas, as well as other poster makers working for the Moulin Rouge. Lautrec was likewise influenced by the classical Japanese wood prints which were in vogue in France at the time.
Lautrec's paintings are of a design onto themselves. His paintings capture the movement and enjoyment of the night life of Paris in the 1890's.
The Toulouse-Lautrec coloring book is a paperback with over thirty images drawn from the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec on 62 pages. Images are printed only on one side so they can be cut out from the book and used as posters. There is a description of each work on the facing page opposite each illustration. The description contains the picture's name, history and info about Lautrec and his life in Paris in the 1880's-90's.
